Three Tips forHalloween is the unofficial start to the holiday season. It’s the sneaky holiday that brings extra temptation into the house and office.

Over the past couple of years I’ve shared 6 Tips for Winning the Battle with Sugar and 9 Scary Facts about Sugar around Halloween.

I consider myself an expert on sugar since I used to be addicted. The bowl of Halloween candy was hard to resist and after I gave in I felt guilty, yucky and depressed. Self-loathing kicked in and I beat myself on the treadmill the next day and by restricting my intake.

Fast forward a few years…and I no longer struggle with sugar. I slowed down and started listening to my body. Our bodies speak to us in symptoms. Sugar makes me grumpy, tired hungry, increases my cravings, bloated and quickly adds weight to my 5’4″ frame.

Now I use alternative sweeteners, fruit and cacao to curb my sweet tooth. I also don’t punish myself with restricting my intake and lovingly process my emotions by journaling, yoga and meditating instead of stuffing them down with food.

Just like life, there is an ebb and flow with healthy habits. The Happy Body Program is a godsend in helping me get back on track when I slip back into a nightly sweet treat. The delicious recipes fill me up and my cravings for sweets magically disappear – it’s kind of amazing. Anytime I want a fresh start it’s my go-to.

Stick with me and I will help you navigate your sugar cravings with easy tips that still let you indulge from time to time.

Enjoying a treat without guilt or punishment is part of the Happy Body Lifestyle. To get you started here are 3 Tips for Sweet Halloween Success:

  1. Set a plan. How many treats can you have? Make a healthy, veggie filled dinner and walk around the neighborhood to see the kids in their cute costumes.
  2. Get extra candy out of the house. Don’t keep the candy laying around the house, especilly in plain site. That’s a recipe for disaster. Throw or give it away pronto.
  3. Pumpkin Spice Treat. Instead of the concentrated sweets in traditional Halloween candy try this pumpkin spiced treat. You can also make this into a healthy hot chocolate by subbing the pumpkin spice for cacao powder.

Pumpkin Spice Treat

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2-1 TB pumpkin spice*
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2-1 TB maple syrup*

Warm and blend ingredients on stove top. If you want a foamy top, blend warmed ingredients in blender. Yum!
