Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are nature’s candy.
They are the essence of a true Superfood. Filled with anti-oxidants that fight against disease and aging, bursting with juicy flavor, and just enough sweetness to satisfy a sugar craving without the inflammatory reaction and mood swings that accompany refined sugar.
Today, I’m sharing how the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG), ‘Dirty 12’ and ‘Clean 15’ lists for 2016 and how they’ll save you money and your health.
First a story…
Yesterday, I headed to the grocery to pick up ingredients for a delicious avocado, mango and strawberry dip from the Oh She Glows cookbook.
I past the bright red, conventional strawberries since they ranked #1 for the first time on the ‘Dirty Dozen’ list and was super bummed to see the organic strawberries were COVERED in mold!
I could have turned a blind eye to knowing that the conventional strawberries were covered in chemicals linked to hormone disruption, cancer, reproductive damage and neurological problems but since I’ve researching for the Happy Body Program, I couldn’t do it to my body. So, I opted for frozen organic strawberries.
Clean Eating Trick: Fresh is best but organic frozen beats pesticide filled conventional produce hands down.
This might feel like a downer topic, but knowledge is power.
Your body has to work harder to get these nasty chemicals out of your precious ecosystem. Excess toxins show up as allergies, PMS, excess weight, fatigue, digestive woes, inflammatory diseases (arthritis & thyroid), and embarrassing skin problems like acne, eczema and rosacea.
Avoid these toxic chemicals without breaking the bank by using the EWG’s ‘Dirty 12’ and ‘Clean 15’ list.
You’d think that the government’s Environment Protection Agency (EPA) would have created safe guidelines for pesticide use but think again.
The EPA created tolerance levels for the amount of pesticides to be safely used but hasn’t accounted for newer research showing that toxic chemicals can be harmful at smaller doses or when combined with other chemicals.
Even scarier is that these levels are based on adults not children whose growing bodies thrive on being chemical free.
Get smart with your shopping efforts and protect your insides. A great first step is the ‘Dirty 12’ and ‘Clean 15’ lists.
